Rumsey Hall Students Perform in Regional Honor Choir in Providence
A group of Rumsey Hall students recently traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to participate in a regional Honor Choir concert, joining talented young singers from across the Northeast for several days of rehearsals, collaboration, and performance.
Under the direction of acclaimed conductor Robert T. Gibson, the students performed as part of a large Gospel Choir composed of singers from throughout the Northeast region. The experience culminated in a public concert at The VETS theater in Providence, where the ensemble performed to a full audience and received multiple standing ovations.
One of the most memorable moments of the weekend was the world premiere of “Beulah Land,” a new work written by composer and educator Rollo Dilworth for this Honor Choir. Students had the unique opportunity to meet Dilworth during the rehearsal process and gain insight into the creative inspiration behind the piece they would bring to life on stage.
In addition to rehearsals and performances, the trip offered meaningful opportunities for students to connect with the broader choral community. The group met Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, who was performing in Providence with the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. Rumsey’s boarding students attended the concert on Friday evening, experiencing another powerful choral performance during their visit.
The trip also included time for students to explore Providence together. A dinner outing at a local Korean restaurant was a highlight for the boarding students, many of whom were delighted to order favorite dishes from home.
For the students involved, the Honor Choir trip provided an opportunity to collaborate with peers who share a passion for music while performing challenging repertoire at a high level. Experiences like this allow Rumsey students to deepen their musical skills, build confidence as performers, and take part in memorable artistic moments, such as premiering a new choral work before a live audience.
The success of the trip reflects the strong performing arts program at Rumsey Hall and the dedication of faculty, such Morgan Rubin, Rumsey’s Upper School Performing Arts Director, who led the trip and continues to create opportunities for students to engage with the wider musical world.
