카디건 Gates Futurists 학생들, 뉴베드퍼드 연구·로보틱스 센터 방문
Eight Cardigan Gates Futurists students recently traveled to New Bedford, Massachusetts, for an inspiring overnight visit to New Bedford Research and Robotics (NBRR), a nonprofit dedicated to providing “access to frontier technologies for entrepreneurial and social impact, through education and skill creation, economic empowerment, and corporate engagement.”
Cardigan’s connection to NBRR comes through school trustee Dan Zinsmeyer ’83, a friend of NBRR founder Mark Parsons. Mr. Zinsmeyer generously funded the trip and helped welcome the boys alongside Mr. Parsons and members of the NBRR team.
“The trip was once again an incredible experience for the boys,” said Director of Gates Jenny Sabados. “They presented with confidence, clarity, and genuine passion, and the professionals in the room were consistently impressed by their depth of thinking, creativity, and poise.”
The experience began with dinner, during which students connected with Mr. Zinsmeyer, Mr. Parsons, and robotics engineers Dishant Patel and Neehal Sharma. The next day, the boys spent a full day immersed in the NBRR lab, touring the facility, testing robots in a series of lively challenges, working with robotic arms, and learning how entrepreneurs develop ideas into viable ventures.
Each Gates Futurists team then delivered a comprehensive presentation to a panel of entrepreneurs, educators, and community leaders: a 15-slide deck, a three-minute video, and five minutes of thoughtful Q&A. The panel offered insights, feedback, and connections to resources through NBRR.
“Our students had the chance not only to test their ideas, but to see how real-world innovators listen, refine, and build,” said Gates Coach Annie Clark. “That kind of feedback is incredibly powerful.”
Among the day’s highlights, Team CoolShoes’ presentation deeply resonated with Mr. Parsons. Their concept features a shoe designed to relieve pressure, friction, and heat for people experiencing neuropathy due to a range of medical conditions, including Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and others.
PK Hockey Co. also took an exciting step forward, negotiating with NBRR to produce molds in the near future for its new puck design!
The same group of students will be attending the Community Change Maker's Challenge at the University of New Hampshire next Friday, May 14.

Cardigan Mountain School 의 Gates Futurists 프로그램 학생 8명이 최근 New Bedford 에 위치한 New Bedford Research and Robotics(NBRR)을 방문해 1박 2일간의 특별한 프로그램에 참여했습니다. NBRR은 교육과 기술 개발, 경제적 역량 강화, 기업 협업 등을 통해 “혁신 기술에 대한 접근 기회를 제공하고 사회적 영향력을 만들어가는 것”을 목표로 하는 비영리 기관입니다.
카디건과 NBRR의 인연은 학교 이사인 Dan Zinsmeyer(’83)와 NBRR 설립자인 Mark Parsons 의 관계를 통해 이어졌습니다. 이번 방문 역시 Mr. Zinsmeyer의 후원으로 진행되었으며, 그는 Mr. Parsons 및 NBRR 팀과 함께 학생들을 직접 맞이했습니다.
카디건의 Gates 프로그램은 학생들이 단순히 학업 성취를 넘어 실제 사회 문제를 발견하고, 이를 해결할 수 있는 아이디어를 기획·발표하는 프로젝트 기반 혁신 교육 프로그램입니다. 학생들은 팀을 이루어 창업, 공학, 디자인 사고(Design Thinking), 문제 해결 능력 등을 배우며, 실제 전문가들 앞에서 자신의 아이디어를 발표하고 피드백을 받는 경험을 하게 됩니다. Gates Futurists는 이러한 프로그램 내에서도 미래 기술과 사회적 혁신에 중점을 둔 심화 프로젝트 그룹입니다.
Gates 프로그램 디렉터인 Jenny Sabados 는
“이번 방문 역시 학생들에게 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 학생들은 자신감 있고 명확하게, 그리고 진정성 있는 열정으로 발표를 진행했으며, 현장 전문가들 역시 학생들의 사고력과 창의성, 침착한 태도에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다.”라고 전했습니다.
프로그램은 첫날 저녁 식사 자리에서 시작되었으며, 학생들은 Mr. Zinsmeyer, Mr. Parsons, 그리고 로봇공학 엔지니어인 Dishant Patel 과 Neehal Sharma 와 교류하는 시간을 가졌습니다.
다음 날 학생들은 하루 종일 NBRR 연구실에서 다양한 활동에 참여했습니다. 시설 투어를 비롯해 여러 로봇 챌린지에 참여하고, 로봇 팔을 직접 다뤄보며, 기업가들이 어떻게 아이디어를 실제 사업으로 발전시키는지 배우는 시간을 가졌습니다.
각 Gates Futurists 팀은 이후 기업가, 교육자, 지역 사회 리더들로 구성된 패널 앞에서 발표를 진행했습니다. 학생들은 15페이지 분량의 발표 자료와 3분짜리 영상, 그리고 질의응답 세션을 준비했으며, 패널들은 이에 대한 조언과 피드백, 그리고 향후 활용 가능한 다양한 리소스를 제공했습니다.
Gates 코치인 Annie Clark 는
“학생들은 자신의 아이디어를 시험해보는 것뿐 아니라, 실제 혁신가들이 어떻게 의견을 듣고, 수정하고, 발전시켜 나가는지를 직접 경험할 수 있었습니다. 이러한 피드백은 학생들에게 매우 큰 의미가 있습니다.”라고 말했습니다.
특히 이날 발표 중 Team CoolShoes의 프로젝트는 Mr. Parsons에게 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. 이 팀은 표피 수포증(EB), 다발성 경화증(MS) 등 다양한 질환으로 인해 신경병증을 겪는 사람들을 위해 압박과 마찰, 열감을 줄여주는 특수 신발 아이디어를 제안했습니다.
또 다른 팀인 PK Hockey Co. 역시 새로운 퍽 디자인 제작을 위해 가까운 시일 내 NBRR과 금형 제작 관련 협의를 진행하게 되며 프로젝트를 한 단계 발전시키게 되었습니다.
한편, 이번에 참여한 학생들은 다음 주 금요일인 5월 14일 University of New Hampshire 에서 열리는 Community Change Maker’s Challenge에도 참가할 예정입니다.
