Student Photography SpotlightHongyi “Andy” Li waits in the hallway of an apartment building in China, camera in hand. He has spent four hours patiently anticipating one perfect moment, when finally, it happens. The bullet train appears before Andy’s viewfinder. He frames the scene, presses down on the shutter, and freezes the moment—the one he has spent hours of his summer vacation waiting for—in time.Visitors can now see this image, along with several other of Andy’s photographs, on display in Hillside's academic building. His collection “Perspectives in Motion,” brings together a range of subjects from campus life at Hillside to moments of movement captured through airplanes and trains, as well as scenes from Chinese cityscapes.Photo by Hongyi "Andy" Li. Andy first began taking photos in 2023. After scrolling through high-quality photos on social media, he was inspired to teach himself how to use a camera and edit photos. Trains, like the bullet train, were among the first subjects he captured. Now his interest lies largely in aviation photography. According to Andy, the first photo he took that made him feel proud as a photographer was of the A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, at Logan Airport in Boston. Another memorable photography experience for Andy took place at the Los Angeles airport (LAX). He recalls, “Everything was perfect—the weather, the spot, the planes. I kept shooting the whole morning until my camera battery died and I had to leave. It was one of the best sessions I've ever had.”While varied in content, each image reflects an interest in perspective, motion, and place. Andy hopes that those who visit his photo gallery notice the contrast between old and new. He says, “In Xiamen and Beijing, I've taken photos of old buildings with new aircraft in the background, and old trains running past modern skyscrapers. I like these kinds of shots because they show how much things have changed.”In addition to trains and planes, Andy has also found influence from his classmates at Hillside School. With a large number of student-photographers on campus, he is able to talk about photography and share photos with like-minded peers. With the encouragement of his friends, Andy has become inspired to think more about his own style. “Hillside has helped me grow in a few ways. I've used outdoor time during iLab to practice taking photos. In ESL class, iMovie projects helped me improve both my filming and editing skills. Most importantly, being in the United States gave me the chance to photograph aircraft that don't exist in China anymore,” says Andy Li, Grade 8.From spending hours waiting in hallways to capture photo-worthy moments, to seeing those same moments displayed in hallways on the other side of the world, Andy’s journey as a photographer is only beginning.  As he continues developing his skills, “Perspectives in Motion” offers not only a look at movement through trains and aircraft, but also a glimpse into the perspective of a young artist.Bullet Train and Chinese Skyscrapers. Photo by Hongyi "Andy" Li. He says, "The most meaningful photo to me is the one with a bullet train and skyscrapers. That train is the fastest in China and was still being tested at the time. SNS에서 고퀄리티 사진들을 접한 뒤, 직접 카메라 사용법과 사진 편집을 독학하기로 결심했습니다. 고속열차와 같은 기차는 그가 가장 먼저 촬영한 대상 중 하나였습니다. 현재 그의 주요 관심사는 항공 사진입니다.앤디에 따르면, 사진가로서 가장 뿌듯함을 느꼈던 첫 작품은 보스턴 로건 공항에서 촬영한 세계 최대 여객기 A380 사진입니다. 또 하나 기억에 남는 촬영 경험은 로스앤젤레스 국제공항(LAX)에서의 촬영입니다. 그는 “모든 조건이 완벽했어요—날씨, 위치, 비행기 모두요. 아침 내내 계속 촬영하다가 카메라 배터리가 다 떨어져서 나올 수밖에 없었는데, 지금까지도 가장 좋았던 촬영 중 하나입니다.”라고 회상합니다.앤디의 사진들은 주제가 다양하지만, 공통적으로 ‘시점(perspective)’, ‘움직임(motion)’, ‘장소(place)’에 대한 관심을 담고 있습니다. 그는 전시를 보는 사람들이 사진 속에서 ‘새로움과 오래됨의 대비’를 발견하기를 바라고 있습니다. “샤먼과 베이징에서 오래된 건물 뒤로 현대적인 항공기가 보이거나, 옛 기차가 현대적인 고층 빌딩을 지나가는 장면을 찍곤 해요. 이런 사진이 저는 좋아요. 세상이 얼마나 변했는지를 보여주거든요.”라고 말합니다.기차와 비행기뿐만 아니라, 앤디는 힐사이드 학교 친구들에게서도 많은 영향을 받고 있습니다. 캠퍼스에는 사진을 좋아하는 학생들이 많아 서로 사진에 대해 이야기하고 작품을 공유할 수 있습니다. 친구들의 격려 속에서 앤디는 자신의 스타일에 대해 더 깊이 고민하게 되었습니다.“힐사이드는 여러 면에서 저를 성장시켜줬어요. iLab 야외 시간에는 사진 촬영을 연습했고, ESL 수업의 iMovie 프로젝트를 통해 촬영과 편집 실력도 향상됐습니다. 무엇보다 미국에 오면서 중국에서는 더 이상 볼 수 없는 비행기들을 직접 촬영할 수 있었던 점이 가장 특별했습니다.”라고 8학년 앤디 리는 말합니다.복도에서 완벽한 순간을 포착하기 위해 몇 시간씩 기다리던 앤디의 여정은, 이제 그 순간들이 다른 나라 학교 복도에 전시되며 이어지고 있습니다. 그의 사진 전시 “Perspectives in Motion”은 기차와 항공기를 통한 ‘움직임’의 기록일 뿐만 아니라, 한 젊은 예술가의 시선을 보여주는 창이기도 합니다.

Phillips Academy News: Phillips Academy Trustees Elect New Head of School

Phillips Academy 이사회(Board of Trustees)는 오늘 James F. Ventre, a native of Methuen, Mass., is currently assistant head of school for admission and financial aid and is one of the longest-serving senior leaders at the Academy. His tenure begins one year from now, July 1, 2027.The unanimous decision was shared by Trustee President Eric Zinterhofer ’89, P’18, ’19, who chaired the search committee. “Jim’s collaborative approach and his ambitions for Andover’s next chapter stood out during an intensive search process that attracted a multitude of qualified candidates,” Zinterhofer said.Ventre will continue to work closely with Head of School Raynard Kington, MD, PhD, P’24,’27 to advance key institutional priorities and to ensure a smooth transition over the coming year. “Jim’s tenure will come at a crucial moment in Andover’s history,” Zinterhofer said. “Approaching the school’s 250th anniversary, Jim will have the opportunity to reimagine and shape an even stronger legacy of excellence across teaching and learning.”Ventre previously served as interim head of school from 2019-2020 and is a seasoned expert among independent school leaders. Ventre joined the Phillips Academy faculty as a teaching fellow in English and later became an admission officer until 1986. After a brief time on Wall Street, he was appointed director of financial aid at Andover in 1990. In 2013 he was appointed dean of admission and in 2018 he became assistant head of school for admission and financial aid.Known for his collaborative approach, Ventre is especially proud of his work stewarding Andover’s need-blind admission policy, which was adopted in 2008. Ventre has served as an advisor, coach, and house counselor, and he has advised numerous professional boards related to admission and financial aid.
