Rosen’s remarks blended classical philosophy and American history and explored the idea that if we want to reduce polarization, we must return to the discipline of deeper, daily reading, especially reading that challenges our assumptions and introduces diverse perspectives.Rosen’s visit to Hill was made possible through The Grantham '61 Constitutional Founders Fund, established in 2022 by Shirley and Philip H. Grantham ’61, who joined students and faculty in the audience for the talk. The Fund supports programming that develops fundamental appreciation of, and robustly examines, the ideas and principles espoused by the founders of the United States of America as a constitutional republic and the concepts of "the right to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," which characterize free, prosperous, and equitable societies.  Drawing on his own “COVID year” spent immersed in the founders, Rosen described how figures such as John Quincy Adams turned to classical thinkers like Cicero in moments of profound personal and political trial, using reading and reflection to cultivate resilience and moral purpose. He contrasted that example with Thomas Jefferson, whose intellectual engagement with liberty did not always align with his actions, which reinforced Rosen’s point that reading ultimately shapes character and conduct.Rosen also described the fierce rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Jefferson, noting that although they were deeply divided in their politics (with Hamilton ultimately dying in a duel with Aaron Burr), they did not treat one another as archenemies. That distinction, Rosen suggested, is one we must recover. In an age when “passion travels further than reason,” amplified by social media, he encouraged students to practice the habits that sustain self-government: thoughtful inquiry, respectful engagement, and time set aside each day for sustained reading.
